  • Ocean Protection and Community Action Training Program — Overview
A comprehensive, practice-oriented training pathway that equips learners with the scientific knowledge, practical skills and community engagement methods needed to protect marine environments. The program blends ocean literacy, threat assessment, hands-on project design, and policy engagement to enable local leaders, educators, NGOs and resource managers to design and deliver effective coastal actions. Participants progress from foundational concepts through applied courses and finish with a capstone project that demonstrates measurable local impact.
  • Ocean Literacy and Earth Systems
Build a holistic understanding of the ocean as the engine of the Earth system, the structure and function of marine ecosystems, and best practices for observing and interpreting ocean data. This module strengthens learners’ ability to connect physical, chemical and biological processes to local environmental conditions and to translate scientific observations into practical stewardship actions.
  • Marine Biodiversity and Habitats
Explore the diversity of marine habitats—from coral reefs and mangroves to seagrass beds and the deep sea—and the conservation priorities that sustain them. Learners gain species-level awareness, habitat-specific management approaches, and tools to assess habitat health and prioritize interventions that protect biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  • Threats, Risk and Resilience
Understand the major threats facing marine environments including pollution, warming and sea level rise, and develop strategies to reduce risk and build resilience for communities and ecosystems. This sequence covers hazard assessment, resilience planning, nature-based adaptation options, and mechanisms to finance and deliver durable outcomes at the local scale.
  • Marine Pollution and Waste Prevention
Practical instruction on preventing and managing marine pollution: reducing plastics and microplastics, managing wastewater and nutrient runoff, mitigating oil and chemical risks, and planning effective community cleanup operations. Emphasis is placed on prevention, low-cost mitigation, monitoring, and community-led waste management solutions that yield measurable improvements.
  • Community Action and Citizen Science
Tools and methodologies for designing local ocean action projects and citizen science programs that generate reliable evidence and drive local decision-making. Topics include problem discovery, project design, field delivery essentials, standard monitoring protocols, data ethics, visualization tools, and strategies for converting citizen-generated evidence into policy and behavior change.
  • Sustainable Coasts and the Blue Economy
Guidance on sustainable fisheries, responsible aquaculture and nature-based coastal restoration that support livelihoods while conserving ecosystems. Learners will study community-based management approaches, value chain considerations, restoration design and delivery, and methods to measure social and ecological outcomes for a resilient blue economy.
  • Policy Compliance, Communication and Advocacy
Practical modules on the legal and governance context for marine protection, compliance and enforcement tools, and strategic communication to mobilize communities and influence policy. Learn how to craft messages that drive participation, build partnerships, engage media, and navigate advocacy pathways to achieve scalable conservation outcomes.
  • Capstone Project — From Idea to Impact
A guided, hands-on capstone that moves participants from concept and scope through design, implementation readiness and final presentation. Capstone teams apply program learning to deliver a local project plan or pilot, develop monitoring and communications materials, and produce a portfolio-ready evidence package demonstrating outcomes and lessons learned.
Empowering communities to protect and restore marine environments
Ocean Protection and Community Action Training Program
This program equips learners with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and community-led approaches needed to safeguard coastal and marine ecosystems. Through focused modules on ocean literacy, pollution prevention, climate resilience, citizen science, sustainable livelihoods, and policy advocacy, participants will learn to design and deliver effective local actions. Ideal for community leaders, educators, NGO staff, fishers, youth groups, and local officials, the course sequence culminates in a capstone project that turns ideas into measurable impact.
